Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
No, really, he didn’t just make a rape joke (which would have been bad enough). According to two different versions of the story: he either said it would be funny if this woman were gangraped, OR he said “this woman must have been raped five times,” like it was a joke. Like, women or people who have been sexually assaulted and are sensitive to that subject—their sensitivities are a fucking joke. I’m guessing that Daniel Tosh never felt the need to carry pepper spray, to not walk alone at night, to avoid certain areas, to look over his shoulder when he felt someone was following him too closely, to always have his keys out, to not dress so provocatively, to never accept a drink from a stranger, to always assume that any guy you see on the street could be a rapist.
Dudes, can you please understand how much this permeates society? These are things women are conditioned to—to avoid being a victim. Because that’s the focus. It’s never on “men, don’t rape people” it’s always, “women, don’t get raped” and so the women who ARE victims are treated as if it’s their fault because all the “rules” we have to follow are for women to follow, not for men and it’s bullshit but it’s a very real fear that many many many women live with. This is simply not comedic material and for someone to give weight to that fear and that culture for a few fucking laughs—I’m sorry, if you think that’s okay, you are an asshole.
