Yeah I guess I’m not so upset with the Yahoo thing because I’ve never been so enamored with Tumblr in the first place. It’s nice for building a good social network and stuff but it kinda sucks as a blog platform and its features are very limited and it isn’t all that user-friendly. And I know Yahoo is kinda not what it used to be but tbh most of the niche news stories I find out about are either from Facebook or Yahoo articles that I stumble upon when I go to check my e-mail (and my e-mail itself is actually pretty user-friendly and efficient).

So…meh.

I like The Mindy Project. It can be really funny at times, but I have really big problem with this scene.

When Mindy’s boyfriend suggests that it might be easier if she cut her hair for their year long stay in Haiti, the above conversation happens. For one, it’s insulting to women with short hair. Two, it’s implying that you need to adjust your appearance in a way that a man would like, not how you would like. And three, that comment “who doesn’t want to me sexualized?”. Well I don’t know about you, Mindy, but I’d rather people see me as a human rather than an object. What makes me angrier is that the other people in the scene cheer and pat her on the back for that comment.

Now I know some of you are going to bitch at me and point at that she does cut her hair at the end of the episode, she really only does it to win back a man, not because she wants to. And when she does, literally every character asks if she’s a boy or tells her she looks like a guy, and one character even asks to see her boobs to prove she’s a girl.

I mean, come on.

I kind of thought the opposite about the hair thing. It’s just explaining the later scene, in that it’s practical for Mindy to cut her hair if she’s going to Haiti, and the only reason she won’t is because “dudes hate it.” Casey doesn’t really care if she doesn’t cut her hair, that’s just the advice that they’re giving her (and it makes sense, really). She’s refusing because she still cares about what dudes (not just Casey) think about her.

Mindy’s self-esteem issues are part of what make her such a great character, imo. Whether or not women SHOULD feel this way, the truth is women DO feel this way. Mindy wants to be loved, and she does what she can to feel that way and to attract men to her so that they will make her feel cared for. It’s way Mindy does such overdramatic things—like cutting her hair in the middle of the night—to win back a man. It’s a messed up mentality, but it makes complete sense from her perspective.

So I’ve become dependent on Afrin and what that means is that Afrin and other nasal sprays are, in a sense, addictive in that my sinuses have gotten used to the effect of them. And what happens is it creates this rebound effect where my ability to breathe through my nose is, well, non-existent without the Afrin. This has been going on since…January. So, about five months.

Anyway, I didn’t really know what was going on until I went to the doctor yesterday and he told me all of this and now he wants me to wean myself off of Afrin (with the help of Claritan, and this anti-inflammatory nasal spray he prescribed me that is non-habit forming).

So, it’s been a day. And…I’m basically miserable. Just give me my Afrin. I need it.

No, that way lies pain and darkness and possibly more serious conditions like a loss of smell and bad damage to the blood vessels along my nasal passages.

I’m glad NBA player Jason Collins has publicly announced that he’s gay. But I’m already sick of hearing how “brave” that was.

Even though the author of this is gay and out, I have a problem with this. Just within my circle of friends there is a lot of diversity and the consequences of coming out would be vastly different for each person. In the end when someone decides to come out and who to and how is his/her own personal decision and it shouldn’t be the result of guilt, but of pride.

I went on amazon and bought all the top books on baby sleep and development. I read through them all, as well as several blogs and sleep websites. I gathered lots of advice.

You shouldn’t sleep train at all, before a year, before 6 months, or before 4 months, but if you wait too late, your baby will never be able to sleep without you. College-aged children never need to be nursed, rocked, helped to sleep, so don’t worry about any bad habits. Nursing, rocking, singing, swaddling, etc to sleep are all bad habits and should be stopped immediately. White noise will help them fall asleep. White noise, heartbeart sounds, etc, don’t work. Naps should only be taken in the bed, never in a swing, carseat, stroller, or when worn. Letting them sleep in the carseat or swing will damage their skulls. If your baby has trouble falling asleep in the bed, put them in a swing, carseat, stroller, or wear them.

Put the baby in a nursery, bed in your room, in your bed. Cosleeping is the best way to get sleep, except that it can kill your baby, so never, ever do it. If your baby doesn’t die, you will need to bedshare until college.

Use the same cues as night: cut lights, keep the house quiet and still. Differentiate naps from nightly sleep by leaving the lights on and making a regular amount of noise. Keep the room warm, but not too warm. Swaddle the baby tightly, but not too tightly. Put them on their back to sleep, but don’t let them be on their backs too long or they will be developmentally delayed. Give them a pacifier to reduce SIDS. Be careful about pacifiers because they can cause nursing problems and stop your baby from sleeping soundly. If your baby sleeps too soundly, they’ll die of SIDS.

Don’t let your baby sleep too long, except when they’ve been napping too much, then you should wake them. Never wake a sleeping baby. Any baby problem can be solved by putting them to bed earlier, even if they are waking up too early. If your baby wakes up too early, put them to bed later or cut out a nap. Don’t let them nap after 5 pm. Sleep begets sleep, so try to get your child to sleep as much as possible. Put the baby to bed awake but drowsy. Don’t wake the baby if it fell asleep while nursing.

You should start a routine and keep track of everything. Not just when they sleep and how long, but how long it has been between sleep, how many naps they’ve had per day, and what you were doing before they slept. Have a set time per day that you put them to bed. Don’t watch the clock. Put them on a schedule. Scheduling will make your life impossible because they will constantly be thrown off of it and you will become a prisoner in your home.

Using CIO will make them think they’ve been abandoned and will be eaten by a lion shortly. It also causes brain damage. Not getting enough sleep will cause behavior and mental problems, so be sure to put them to sleep by any means necessary, especially CIO, which is the most effective form. Extinction CIO is cruel beyond belief and the only thing that truly works because parents are a distraction. The Sleep Lady Shuffle and Ferber method are really CIO in disguise or Controlled Crying and so much better than Extinction. All three of these will prevent your child from ever bonding with you in a healthy way. Bedsharing and gentler forms of settling will cause your child to become too dependent on you.

Topping the baby off before bed will help prevent night wakings. When babies wake at night, it isn’t because they are hungry. If the baby wants to nurse to sleep, press on the baby’s chin to close its mouth. Don’t stop the baby from nursing when asleep because that doesn’t cause a bad habit. Be wary of night feeds. If you respond too quickly with food or comfort, your baby is manipulating you. Babies can’t manipulate. Babies older than six months can manipulate.
Sleep when the baby sleeps. Clean when the baby cleans. Don’t worry. Stress causes your baby stress and a stressed baby won’t sleep.

I was the only girl on an all-boys varsity soccer team. I had to change on the bus during away games because I didn’t have a locker room at other schools. I was not uncomfortable with that, actually. I did what I had to.

But one day I noticed that like three guys who were seniors were just staring at me as I did this and I must have shot them a dirty look because one of them (who is actually a family friend) was like “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to stare, but we’re still trying to figure out how the hell girls do that” and I just felt bad. They just want to get their girlfriend’s bra off without losing an eye and we can remove the whole thing like fucking wizards

This picture is weird. I thought everyone was like me and tucked their arm all the way under their sleeve to do this and then let their bra fall out the bottom of their shirt once undone? Is that not simpler than pulling the strap all the way down to your hand?

And why am I overthinking this?

Mr. Dawkins speaks of belief upon evidence, yet, when the onus of providing on evidence fell on him, he failed to do so.

Dawkins’ justification of his failure to give proof for his sweeping statement is intrinsically flawed; as it could be…

Dawkins is an Islamophobic shithole, and this would be true whether he were an atheist or not. The thing that bothers me is how Dawkins uses his personal, absence-of-religious doctrine to advance bigotry in the same way various religious institutions do in order to bolster their own power and authority. The problem in all cases is not the religion but the presence of shitty human beings, who exist everywhere, in all religions, Dawkins being a prime example if we view militant atheism as its own religion.

I’d been told before that he’s a bit of a dick. Reading his twitter stream confirms this.

This kind of intense, hateful stereotyping gives atheists everywhere a bad name, and that Dawkins has been appointed the leader of a movement through this sort of drivel is proof that there are blind idiots everywhere…it doesn’t matter what they do (or don’t) worship.

Saying “there would be no war without religion” is similar to saying “there would be war without people.” Except that only the second statement is actually true. But neither matter, because they suppose a world which is impossible and cannot exist, y’know, unless we’re talking about genocide…or asteroid impacts.

He’s just intensely (perhaps willfully) ignorant of how individual humans and collective cultures operate.

In the end, Dawkins seems to be mostly concerned not with the betterment of mankind, but with the betterment of Dawkins.

I always felt guilty, from my religious agnostic tower, not liking Richard Dawkins as I’ve sorta felt that this stems from my conservative Christian upbringing—somehow I still (to this day) feel defensive of my old faith despite my separation from it. But I’ve come to realize that I was right about Dawkins back then. He’s not a good person.
